Random First Line. Story Thirty-Four

As she searched, her movements where frantic. She needed that pillow. The one the tooth fairy left next to her son on his own pillow as he lay sleeping. It was the only proof she had that he was hers.

His last baby tooth, and five dollars where still tucked in the pocket of the heart shaped pillow. Why she had done that; she didn’t know. But this was crazy; she knew this thing standing on her front porch was NOT her twenty-two year old son.

Like the Nicholas Cage movie, “Face Off” she had to find her son. Putting his dog in the car, even the dog wasn’t that stupid, they rammed through the garage; leaving the deranged lunatic on the porch. She was going to find her son.

As a witness; she called the local pizza parlor Barro’s. One of them had gone to high school with her older kids. Now she had proof this crazy young adult had tried to pretend to be someone he was clearly not.

Half the names on the list had already been crossed off. He moved onto the next one. He was on his twelveth piece of paper; the first eleven looked about the same.

They where Christmas card lists. All stemming from one murdered family of seven. All these people had disappeared without a trace twenty four hours after having  received a Christmas card from the dead.

The Coney family had looked happy in that last Christmas card. The background was beautiful fall leaves the parents where standing at the trunk of an old oak tree. The children, aged five through nineteen, all up in the tree on the limbs.

Was it the animal type personality test. What kind of animal is your personality. Or was it ‘that first job’; and the book What color is your parachute?

He paused and thought a moment about the hierarchy of the animal kingdom. According to his research the murdered family had one snail, one porcupine, two chipmunks, two owls, and a fox. What personality type would prey on them? He took the test quickly and came up a beaver.

The fire was getting closer; as he zoomed in on her lighter.

She laughed, “Do you think you’ll be able to see anything with the night vision lens now that I’ve flicked my lighter.”

He kept the video camera at an arms distance from his body and said, “Only your beautiful face darling.”

“You know I hate being on video Daniel.”

He replied, “I know, but it will be a cartoon image of you. I just want to play around with a new app.”

“Really, cartoon of me sitting on our back porch smoking dear?”

“Behave”, he said walking back towards the patio door. “Dinner will be ready in fifteen minutes”.

“Mmhhh…what are you feeding me?” she asked

Someone must have seen him, because the police where at his door.

It had been an odd day to begin with, but this took the cake. The officer was holding out a mobile phone; and said, your girlfriend.

He took the phone wondering what girlfriend.  Then he heard her voice. Sorry, she said. The only word I knew in Spanish was novio.

“I had a feeling; you know how I get those. I got scared. I woke up from a dream. Couldn’t get through on the phone; so called the local police.” She was out of breath as she spoke so fast.

He knew the voice, but not the person. With an amazing memory he was gifted or cursed. He thought first grade. Touched his ear where he had hurt it on a desk.

He remembered that. But who was this, and why where they calling.

“My sister needs your help.” She said.

“Ah, the twins….” there had been one set in his kindergarten and first grade class. So different from each other. The one calling must be desperate a she usually guarded her sister from him since the first day of kindergarten.

The first words as he sat in class for the first time out of this seemingly nice looking four year old vixen were, “You have pretty eyes”. The next thing he knew; he was tackled out of his seat by the other one. Like he had anything to do with what the other one said.
